Ripley is a Derbyshire market town between Derby and Nottingham, with a mix of older stone and brick buildings in the centre and housing estates spreading out along the Amber Valley. The town grew up around its mining and ironworking past and the terraced streets from that era still make up a good part of the housing. These older terraces with their shared walls and back yards are the kind of properties where rats move between houses easily, using the drains and the gaps in the brickwork that come with age.
