Food Transportation

Every stage of the food life cycle has to be addressed from a pest control point of view, including transportation. Whether the food is transported by road, train or air it is crucial that pests do not become a problem.

At PestControl.co.uk we understand the specific needs of the food transportation industry, making us an ideal candidate to put a pest control system in place for you. We use field biologists who have been given additional training in pest control concerns to complete a survey and make appropriate suggestions, which our pest control technicians then carry out.

Food Transport

You will not want to deliver products to their destination which have a pest control problem, which is why it is important to have a proper system in place. For instance, doing what you can to ensure that the products you receive for delivery do not already have a pest infestation.

If transporting food by truck, for instance, you should make sure that the vehicle is clean (at least on the inside!) and in good repair. A field biologist from PestControl.co.uk will be able to carry out a survey to make sure this is the case, and will provide you with a report pointing out any problems. Solutions will also be suggested, which can be carried out by one of our pest control technicians.

Shipping Cargo

One of the times when it is crucial to take proper steps regarding pest control is when you are delivering or receiving shipping cargo.

The most common pest control technique used against pests in cargo is phosphine fumigation. This has many advantages, in that it can penetrate cardboard, thin wooden crates and plastic. It will kill pests at all stages of their life cycle and leaves no pesticide residue.

It is appropriate to use for most bulk foods, including:

  • Grains
  • Cereals
  • Dried fruit
  • Cocoa beans
  • Nuts
  • Rice

This is a technique which requires some time, typically there is a 14 day exposure period, following which it must be left for a suitable amount of time to ventilate.

This is an ideal solution if you are receiving goods from abroad and want to be sure they are pest-free before taking them in to your possession.
