  • Moth Control Methods

As with all pest control, the best moth control methods come under the prevention category. After all if you can prevent an infestation then you are not going to have to deal with the damage that it can do. However if you do get a problem with moths, especially if there are a number of them, then it is best to get in the experts to deal with the infestation.

It is the larvae of moths that do all the damage.

    Preventing a Moth Infestation

One of the things that moths are most attracted to, as everyone knows (although nobody knows why for sure) is light. During the day there is the same level of light everywhere so you don’t have to worry too much when it’s light but when darkness falls it is the artificial lights that we have which are going to attract moths. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep your windows closed during the night, especially when you still have lights on.

Of course one of the major problems with moths is what they can do to the clothes that you have in storage. It’s common to find clothes that you have put in the loft for storage have many holes in them once you take them out because moths have eaten through them. The way that used to be dealt with in the past was to include moth balls in with the clothes, but they create an unpleasant smell so that isn’t done very much anymore. What is done now, instead, is to put aromatic red cedar wood in with the clothes. This keeps the moths away and also has a pleasant smell.

    Getting Rid of Moths

As mentioned, if you have a large infestation of moths then it’s best to get in pest control experts to deal with it. Alternatively though you could also just purchase your own spray to try to kill the moths. To prevent the infestation spreading any further you could also get some sticky traps to get the adult moths. There are some that you can get which release pheromones to attract the moths to them, in order to get them sooner.

If you have some clothes which you think have moth larvae or eggs on them, then the best way to deal with them is to freeze the clothes. The moths won’t be able to stand up to the low temperatures. Of course your clothes could have trouble with that as well which is why it’s best to put them in a vacuum packed plastic bag for protection. And when you take them out you should allow them some time to warm up inside the bag before taking the clothes out again.

You should beware of the fact that not all moths attack fabrics though, the white-shouldered moth lays its eggs in food so if you have moths around you should also make sure your food is covered up properly.
