  • Treating Woodworm

When it comes to treating woodworm there are a couple of different options that you are going to have, and for either one it is best to get pest control experts in to carry it out. Which is going to be the best treatment option though is going to come down to the size and spread of the woodworm infestation.

    Woodworm.

    Woodworm Infestations

Before the best pest control option for treating woodworm can be determined, the extent and severity of it has to be determined. That is very hard to tell from the outside which is why it’s a good idea to get in an expert who will be able to use a borescope to see inside the wood and tell how much damage has been done.

Sometimes though it will be discovered that either no treatment is either going to be necessary because it is not an active infestation, or else possible because too much damage has already been done. There are some species of woodworm which only attack living trees, so if the damage has been done by them then clearly it won’t be active anymore and it won’t be necessary to do anything about it. Or if the structural integrity of the wood has already been compromised too much then no treatment is going to be able to save it, so the wood will just have to be replaced.

    Woodworm Treatments

If woodworm treatments are going to be necessary and possible though, there are a couple of possibilities which are going to be available. One is to use an insecticide spray which can be applied to the wood. This will gradually seep in to the wood and kill the woodworm. However the key word there is “gradually” which means that it is only appropriate if the infestation is not too severe and not very much damage has been done yet.

If a lot of damage has already been done then it is going to be necessary to fumigate the area, which is advantageous because the gas used is going to be able to get in to the wood much faster and therefore kill the woodworm sooner. This will prevent very much more damage being done and will be performed when there isn’t long left to save the wood.

    Preventing Woodworm Infestations

Those are the two pest control methods which can be used to treat for woodworm then, but how about how to prevent an infestation in the first place? One thing you can do is paint or varnish your wood as they are not able to get beneath the surface through that kind of coating. More fundamentally though, all you have to do is make sure that all of the wood in your home remains dry.

You don’t get woodworm in dry wood because if it is dry then it means there will be no source of water for the woodworm when they are tunnelling through the wood. Making sure the humidity levels in your home are low and that you don’t have any leaking pipes is how you can do that.
