  • Ant Control for Homes

When you have an ant infestation in your home the best thing to do is call in pest control experts to come and get rid of it. They will be able to find the queen and kill it, effectively ending the infestation. In the meantime though, there are a number of things that you can do to limit the effects and extent of the infestation.

    Ants in the house.

    Keeping Ants Out

One of the keys to effective ant control for homes is keeping as many outside as possible. There are several ways that you can do this. First of all it’s a good idea to block up as many entrances as you can. So keeping windows and doors shut as much as possible is a good first step. They are so small however they are probably going to be get in around the windows and underneath the doors. Which is why it’s also a good idea to weather proof your doors and windows so that is not possible anymore.

Even if you do that though there still might be a few holes that you have not managed to find and fill in. To deal with that problem, and also to help kill the ants that are already on your property, you should put down some substances that are poisonous for ants around the entrances and anywhere that they are active.

By putting them around the entrances you will not only be killing any ants that try to get in but also the ones that try to get back to the nest. There are a number of substances you can use for that, such as boric acid powder and Diatomaceous Earth. The latter is usually better, especially if you have young children or pets on the property as it is non toxic. As stated, this can also be applied to places where the ants are already most active.

It’s likely that you are going to find the most amount of ants in the kitchen as they are going to be looking for crumbs and little bits of food that they can find. Of course you are going to want to keep your kitchen (and the rest of your property) clean for this reason. It’s also not a bad idea to put out some poisoned bait for them so that they do not just scatter looking for some other source of food but they are actually killed.

    Killing the Queen

However effective the pest control methods are that you employ to limit the amount of ants in your home though, the infestation is not going to be finished until the queen is killed. The first step towards doing this is discovering where the nest is. That’s particularly important of course if you are planning on pouring boiling water on it, but that is not actually the most efficient way of getting the queen.

As the queen tends to stay right at the bottom of the nest there’s no guarantee that the water is going to get down that far. Which is why pest control operatives will usually leave out some poisoned bait for the ants instead, to take back the nest with the hope that the queen will get some.
