  • Pest Control: Woodlice

Woodlice are, along with spiders, one of the most harmless pests that you can get on your property. In fact if you find a woodlouse infestation then you should probably be more concerned about the condition of your property as they are only generally attracted to damp conditions. While it is a pest control problem then, unless you are scared of woodlice, it is one of the tamest ones that you can get. Still, it will need to be dealt with.

    A woodlouse.

    Getting Rid of Woodlice

Unless it’s a very big infestation of woodlice, in which case it’s a good idea to get pest control experts in to deal with it, getting rid of woodlice couldn’t be simpler really. It just involves sweeping them up and then putting them back outside.

Alternatively you could use a spray or an insecticide powder to kill them. If you want to do that then it’s best to use a powder such as Diatomaceous Earth. It’s non-toxic and it has a better chance of getting all of the woodlice. That’s because on their backs they have a protective shell of course and so if you spray them that is going to protect them to a large extent. However if you put down powder then they are going to have to walk through it and as their feet are not protected that is going to be the more effective method.

As stated though, it’s not really necessary to do any of that, you can just put them back outside and then deal with the problem of damp which will have caused the problem in the first place.

    Finding Woodlice

If you do have a large infestation of woodlice then you might find it difficult to put the powder down in all of the places that they are present, so you might have to find some of the places that they are hiding. If you are doing that then the thing to do is to put the insecticide powder down anywhere that is dark and preferably damp.

For example, if you have a wood fire in your living room then you may well find them amongst the logs for the fire. Another common place to find them is behind skirting boards, which is another reason that using insecticide powder is advantageous because it can work in the smallest of gaps.

If you are looking for woodlice outside then, again, it is going to be in places that are dark and damp that you are going to want to look. So underneath rocks, in amongst shrubbery and places like that. During the night is the only time that they tend to come out. However, somewhat ironically considering that they like damp conditions, if it rains hard then they might come inside. So if you only have a few woodlice indoors and it rained recently that might be the reason, rather than your having a problem with damp on your property.
