  • Natural Spider Control

Finding an infestation of spiders in your house would probably classify as one of the worst birthday presents ever, and it wouldn’t be very nice on any other day of the year either. If you do find spiders in your home then one of your options is going to be to get in pest control experts to come and get rid of them. Ideally though of course you are going to avoid getting them in the first place, and there are some natural spider control methods that can help with that.

Keep spiders out of your home.

    Preventing Spider Infestations

Spiders are extremely mobile and they can squeeze through very small gaps so keeping them outside if they want to get in is not easy. If you keep your windows closed though, especially at night, and you weather proof them as well so there are no gaps around the outside when they are closed, then you should be quite successful.

The reason that spiders are sometimes quite persistent in trying to get in to your property is because sometimes you are going to have a female which is letting off pheromones and attracting males. At this time of year of course the weather is too cold for spiders. And fortunately when it does get warmer they will stay outside most of the time. When they become the biggest problem, which is the time known as “spider season” is just after the end of summer, in September and October, when the weather is getting colder and so the spiders are coming inside for the warmth. This is the worst time of year for spider-haters, but right now the weather is still going to be too cold for a lot of spiders to be around.

Apart from just keeping your windows shut though there isn’t very much more that you can do to prevent a spider infestation. It’s a good idea of course to keep your home free of the things that they eat, such as flies. Especially around the window frames, they should be kept clear of everything that a spider could eat. There are also spider repellent sprays that you can use, but if you want to keep with natural pest control methods then really you are going to have to trust in old wives’ tales.

    Old Wives’ Tales

It shows just how difficult a pest control problem it is to keep spiders out of your house when a lot of the prevention techniques are old wives’ tales. Needless to say, none of these techniques have been proven (or they would be scientific solutions) so they are far from guaranteed to work. One method that was popular last spider season was to put fresh conkers around the house, as it is thought spiders don’t like the smell of them. Another idea is to put out citrus fruit, which might block the scent of pheromones from the female spiders, so the males don’t realise they are in there.
