  • Household Pests

There are a number of pest control techniques for dealing with household pests, and it depends on what kind of pest it is as to what the best way to get rid of them is going to be. Having said that however, there are only a handful of prevention methods that you have to take which will keep the majority of them away.

    Common household pests.

    Food Sources

When you hear that a house has got a pest control problem most people immediately think that it must be a mess. While this is true some of the time, it is not always the case. There certainly are plenty of pests that are attracted to the food that we throw away or don’t clear up in the first place though, so keeping your property clean and tidy is one of the most important preventative techniques.

This means making sure that you don’t have any crumbs or scraps of food on the floor, counters or tables and also that your rubbish is disposed of correctly. In terms of keeping your home free of food sources, a good cleaning regime is important. Whether you have a set time of the day when all of the cleaning is done or you just clean as and when a mess is made, that should be effective at keeping pests away.

In terms of how to properly dispose of your rubbish though, the important point is that it has to be protected. Just the bin bag on its own is not going to protect the refuse inside from the sharp gnawing teeth of mice and rats. You have to make sure, therefore, that when you put your rubbish outside it is always kept in a solid plastic bin with the lid shut so that pests can’t get to it, and aren’t attracted to your property.

    Water Sources

Just as important as keeping your house free of food sources is to make sure that there is no water that they can get to either. In fact there are more pests that require external sources of water than there are that eat the same sorts of things that we do. For example woodworm, silverfish and woodlice are attracted almost exclusively to damp conditions. While rats, mice and cockroaches are just as likely to be attracted to a house where they can get water as they are to somewhere they can get food.

Something that most people don’t think of as a pest control issue but really is then is the state of their plumbing and drainage system. If you make sure that is all working properly and there are no leaks or blockages then you’ll be preventing a number of pest infestations.

    Blocking Entrances

Finally you should go around and check all of your exterior walls for any little holes that pests might be able to get in through. There are lots of pests that can get in very little gaps so it’s best not to rely on this being successful, and instead concentrate on the methods described above so as to not attract them in the first place.
