  • What’s the Flea Lifecycle?

If you are going to be effective with your flea treatments you are going to have to not only treat your pet, but also the environment in which your pet lives. That’s because of the way that the flea life cycle works, which will now be explained. The important thing about it though is that you are going to need pest control treatments to be carried out not just on your pet but on your home as well.

    The flea life cycle.

    Eggs

When you first realise that your pet has got a pest control problem with fleas, they will almost certainly have already started laying eggs. Now the things about fleas’ eggs is that they are not sticky the way that a lot of parasites’ eggs are. This means that instead of sticking to your pet they are going to fall off on to the floor or wherever else your pet happens to be at the time.

This means that you are going to end up with fleas growing all over the house, wherever your pet goes. If you are going to get rid of them all then a pest control regime is going to have to be practised everywhere therefore. The problem is not so much with the eggs though of course but what they turn in to.

    Larvae

It can take anything from a couple of days to a couple of weeks for an egg to hatch and for larva to come out. When it comes to getting rid of the larvae, that is more difficult than the eggs. The eggs should be hoovered up by a normal vacuum cleaner, however with the larvae, they are so small that they can wrap themselves around the strands of a carpet and cling on so that the vacuum does not get them.

What you have to do in order to get rid of the larvae therefore is to steam clean your carpets and upholstery. This is a cleaning technique which involves applying hot water at high pressures to the fabric and then sucking all of the water back up, with any dirt (or growing fleas) as well.

    Pupae

The final stage of development before an adult flea emerges is the pupal stage. That’s when the larva gets all wrapped up like a cocoon and changes in to an adult flea. This stage can last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of years. The adult flea will only emerge when the conditions are right. They take in to account things like the carbon dioxide level and whether there are any footsteps close by. That’s why if a house gets abandoned, when people move in again there can still be a flea infestation present.

When the conditions are right, the adult flea will emerge and jump on to your pet, continuing the infestation.
