Colne sits at the top of the Pendle valley in east Lancashire, a former cotton town with rows of stone-built terraces climbing the hillsides around the town centre. The housing is tightly packed in the older parts of town, with back yards, shared alleyways and rear access lanes creating perfect conditions for rats and mice. Food waste left in bins and along ginnels attracts rats and they move between properties through shared drainage runs and gaps in the stonework. We deal with rat problems right across Colne, from the terraces around Albert Road and Burnley Road through to the estates on the edges of town.

Colne Water runs through the centre and joins the River Calder below the town. The watercourse and the overgrown land along its banks give rats a natural route through the built-up area and properties near the water see more rodent activity as a result. The stone terraces themselves present their own challenges. The walls are thick but the pointing between stones deteriorates over time and mice only need a gap the width of a pencil to get inside. Once in the cavity between the inner and outer walls, they can travel from room to room and even between houses. Mouse control in these older terraces often means sealing entry points as well as trapping.

Higher up, the newer housing around the Lennox Park and Horsfield areas tends to have fewer issues, but even modern homes get problems if there is food waste or bird feeders attracting rodents. In summer, wasp nests are common in loft spaces and under the stone eaves of the older terraces. The town also has a growing issue with fleas, often brought in by pets and then getting into carpets and soft furnishings where they quickly multiply.
