New Barn is a small village in the borough of Dartford, sitting on higher ground above the A2 corridor between Longfield and Southfleet. It was developed mainly in the 1960s and 1970s as a planned residential area and the housing is predominantly detached and semi-detached houses with generous gardens. The village is bordered by farmland and woodland on several sides, including the ancient woodland around Beacon Wood Country Park to the north and that semi-rural setting directly shapes the pest pressures that residents face. Grey squirrels from Beacon Wood regularly find their way into loft spaces across the village, entering through lifted tiles, gaps in soffits and where dormer windows meet the main roof. Mice also take advantage of these same entry points and the surrounding farmland provides a constant supply of field mice heading for shelter as the weather cools.

Brown rats are present around the field edges and hedgerows that border New Barn and they follow drainage ditches and garden boundaries into the residential streets. Properties on the village perimeter, backing directly onto fields or woodland, tend to see the most rat activity. The allotments and gardens within the village also provide food and cover and rats can establish runs through multiple gardens without being noticed until numbers build up.

Wasp nests turn up regularly through the summer months, with the well-stocked gardens, garden sheds and mature hedgerows all providing suitable nesting sites. The 1960s and 1970s housing construction used generous roof void spaces and ventilation openings that wasps use as entry points. New Barn is a pleasant village where the closeness to nature is part of the appeal, but it does mean pest issues come with the territory.
