Brasted sits in the Darent Valley on the edge of the North Downs, a quiet village where older cottages and converted farmhouses mix with a handful of newer builds. The River Darent runs close by and the surrounding countryside is mostly fields and woodland, which means there is always wildlife moving through. Rats and mice follow the watercourse and hedgerows and properties backing onto open land tend to see more activity than those tucked into the village centre. The older buildings around the high street often have stone foundations and cavity walls that give rodents easy routes inside and once they find a warm roof space or kitchen void they rarely leave on their own. Wasps are another regular call in Brasted. The mix of old rooflines, wooden fascias and garden sheds gives queen wasps plenty of sheltered spots to start a nest each spring and by midsummer a colony tucked under roof tiles or inside a loft can be a real nuisance. We also see a fair number of mouse calls through autumn and winter as field mice push indoors when temperatures drop. Being surrounded by farmland makes this area a natural corridor for rodent movement and even well-maintained homes can end up with unwanted visitors. Squirrels coming down from the woodland around Brasted Chart sometimes find their way into lofts too, chewing through wiring and insulation once they settle in.

Moles can be a headache for anyone with a decent-sized garden here. The chalky soil of the Downs drains well but still holds enough worms to keep moles busy and a single mole can turn a neat lawn into a mess overnight. Between the river, the farmland and the wooded hillsides, Brasted has the kind of varied landscape that supports a wide range of pests through every season.
