Fairlight is a hilltop village perched on the sandstone cliffs east of Hastings, looking out across the English Channel. The village sits within the Hastings Country Park nature reserve, surrounded by ancient woodland, heathland and dramatic cliff scenery. Properties here include Victorian and Edwardian villas, 1930s bungalows and more modern homes, all set among mature gardens and tree-lined lanes. The combination of dense vegetation, old buildings and proximity to the coast creates conditions where a range of pests thrive. Rats move along the wooded gullies known locally as glens and properties backing onto the country park are particularly likely to see rat activity in their gardens and outbuildings.

The sandstone geology gives Fairlight its elevated position but also means that the ground can be unstable in places, with cracks and fissures in retaining walls and foundations that offer entry points for mice and other small animals. Mouse control is a year-round service here, as the sheltered gardens and well-stocked bird tables that many residents maintain provide an easy food supply. Grey squirrels are common in the woodland and regularly cross into gardens and roof spaces, gnawing through fascia boards and soffit vents to get into lofts.

The coastal location brings its own pest challenges. Seagulls nest on flat-roofed buildings and chimney stacks and their aggressive behaviour during the breeding season can make gardens and patios difficult to use. Seagull control measures such as netting and spike systems can help protect properties from nesting birds. During summer, the warm sheltered spots in Fairlight's gardens and buildings attract large numbers of wasps and wasp nest removal is one of our busiest services from June onwards.
