Jarvis Brook is a residential area on the eastern side of Crowborough in East Sussex, sitting on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. The neighbourhood has a mix of Victorian and Edwardian houses near the centre, along with inter-war and post-war development further out. The railway line runs through the area and the A26 passes close by, giving it a busier feel than the more rural parts of the forest. Brown rats follow the railway embankments and the stream that gives the area its name, moving between the scrubby ground alongside the tracks and the gardens of nearby houses. The allotments and larger gardens in the area also attract rats with their compost and stored produce.

The older housing near the centre of Jarvis Brook has the kinds of gaps and entry points that mice exploit. Victorian and Edwardian construction develops cracks in the pointing, gaps around window frames and openings where services pass through walls, all of which give mice routes inside. The proximity of the Ashdown Forest means field mice are always available in the surrounding landscape and they move into buildings each autumn. The woodland on the forest edge also brings grey squirrels close and they get into roof spaces in the houses nearest the tree canopy.

Wasp nests are common through summer in the lofts, garden sheds and hedgerows across Jarvis Brook. The sandy soils in this part of Sussex are good for ground-nesting wasps too. The area sits at that interesting junction between the suburban and the wild, with the forest on one side and the town of Crowborough on the other and the pest pressures reflect both influences. Keeping buildings in good repair and managing food sources is the most practical way to stay ahead of the activity that comes with living on the edge of one of the largest areas of open land in the south-east.
