Stowting is a small village tucked into a fold of the North Downs above the Stour valley, between Wye and Lyminge. The village sits on the steep slopes of the escarpment with wonderful views south across the Weald and the surrounding landscape is a mix of chalk grassland, beech woodland and farmland. The steep terrain and chalky ground create a slightly different pest environment to the clay lowlands below. Rats are still present, following the field edges and hedge banks, but the drier chalk slopes mean they are more concentrated around water sources, farm buildings and the lower-lying areas near Stowting Bottom. The houses in Stowting range from old flint and brick cottages to more modern homes and the older buildings on the hillside can shift and settle on the chalk, creating gaps that mice use to get inside.
