Trench Wood is a small spot in the Weald named after the woodland that surrounds it, a few properties along the lanes where the trees press in close. The name suggests a hollow or ditch in the wooded landscape and the terrain here is typical of the High Weald with its steep-sided valleys, sandstone outcrops and dense ancient woodland. Living among this much tree cover brings certain pest challenges that are less common in the open countryside. Grey squirrels are the most notable. The mature oaks, chestnuts and beeches support large numbers of them and they make the short jump from branch to rooftop without difficulty. Rats also use the woodland floor for cover, travelling along the ditches and stream beds that wind through the trees. Properties near water or on the valley floor tend to see the most activity.
