Wellbrook is a small area near Mayfield in the East Sussex High Weald, a quiet rural spot with scattered houses and farms set in the rolling countryside. The landscape is classic Wealden, with small fields bounded by thick hedgerows, streams in the valley bottoms and patches of ancient woodland on the slopes. Rats are a constant presence in this kind of countryside, living in the hedgerows, stream banks and around farm buildings. The older buildings have the structural quirks that come with age, including gaps around timber frames, loose mortar in stone walls and doors and windows that no longer fit perfectly. Mice take advantage of these openings, nesting in wall cavities, under floors and in roof spaces. The modern properties are not immune either, as mice find gaps around utility entries and at the junction between the house and any extension. Blocking these access points is a critical part of any long-term solution in a rural location where mice are always nearby outside.

Wasps build nests in the outbuildings, old trees and under the tiles of the older properties and wasp nest removal is a routine summer job in this part of the High Weald. The woodland brings squirrels close to homes and loft damage from squirrels gnawing through wiring and insulation is something we see regularly. Flea treatments are common too, with outdoor cats and dogs picking up fleas from the wildlife that moves through the fields and gardens around here.
