Upper Halliford is a residential area on the southern edge of Shepperton, stretching along the Upper Halliford Road towards Sunbury. It is quieter and less well known than the main Shepperton village, made up mostly of semi-detached and detached homes from the 1930s through to the 1960s, with some newer infill development. The area backs onto open land and allotments in places and the Halliford Mere lake is close by. That combination of residential gardens, open ground and water makes Upper Halliford a reliably busy spot for pest work. Rats move between the lake edges, the allotments and the gardens of nearby homes, particularly through the autumn and winter months when food becomes scarcer in the open countryside.

The 1930s houses that line much of Upper Halliford Road and the connecting streets have the typical features that attract mice. Bay windows with voids underneath, cavity walls with open weep holes and suspended wooden floors all provide routes for mice to enter and move around inside a property. Many of these homes have also had extensions, conservatories and garages added over the decades and each addition creates potential new gaps at the junction between old and new building work. We find that a thorough check of these join points is often the key to solving a recurring mouse problem in properties of this age.

The allotments and the open land near Halliford Mere attract wasps during the summer and ground-nesting species are common in the rough grass and embankments around the lake. Loft spaces in the older houses also provide sheltered spots for wasp colonies to build in. Squirrels are another routine issue, getting into roof voids through damaged soffit boards or where trees overhang and give them direct access to the roofline. Upper Halliford does not make the headlines, but it keeps us coming back on a regular basis.
