Woodlands is a small residential pocket in the Isleworth area, sitting between the Mogden Water Treatment Works and the streets around Woodlands Road and Thornbury Road. It is not a place that appears on many maps as a distinct neighbourhood, but locals know it well enough. The housing is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces close to Isleworth station and some later twentieth-century builds further along. The proximity to the Mogden works is the single biggest factor in local pest activity. Water treatment sites attract rats in large numbers because of the combination of water, warmth and organic material. The rats radiate outward from the site into the surrounding streets, using the sewer network, garden boundaries and overgrown land as travel routes.

The Victorian terraces in Woodlands have all the usual features that allow mice to move into homes during the colder months. Shared party walls between terraced houses mean that once mice are in the row, they can travel the full length without going outside. We often deal with calls from several houses in the same street at once, which makes sense when you understand how the internal structure of these properties connects them below floor level. Proofing individual houses is the most effective long-term approach, sealing the gaps around pipes, cables and airbricks that mice rely on.

The Mogden works can also produce an insect nuisance during warm weather, with midges and flies drawn to the site and then dispersing into the surrounding area. Wasps nest readily in the eaves and loft spaces of the terraced houses and the overgrown strips of land near the works give ground-nesting species a foothold too. Flea outbreaks occur from time to time, usually in homes with pets that spend time in the gardens and green strips around the neighbourhood. Woodlands is a small area but the combination of old housing and the nearby water treatment site means pest calls from here are disproportionately common.
