Bird Scarers Warrington

An audible bird scarer sticking out over vegetation.

Bird scarers have to be carefully managed to provide an effective noise deterrent for birds. At PestControl.co.uk we understand how to get the best out of this bird control technique, which is very useful when you want to clear birds of a large area.

Bird Scarers

There are many types of bird scarers, but without careful management most are ineffective. When they are installed and monitored by pest control experts such as the ones from PestControl.co.uk however, they can be extremely effective in clearing birds from expansive areas.

While most bird deterrents keep birds away from a very specific location, such as the ledge or roof of a building, bird scarers can keep them from an entire area. That is why they are often used around airport runways to keep flocks of birds away and to keep seagulls and pigeons away from large (often public) areas.

That is not to say that the other forms of bird deterrents will not be needed in the area, it is usually necessary to combine a number of strategies for the best results.

How Audible Bird Scarers and Noise Deterrents Work

Simply creating a system which emits a loud noise may cause birds to move a little further from the source but they are unlikely to go far. That is why it is much more effective to use recordings of predators or the distress call of the pest bird at normal levels instead. This is also much less intrusive for people.

There are two different ways that audible bird deterrents tend to work, depending on the target bird which you want out of the area. These are:

Loud speakers installed at the end of an airport runway.
  • Social birds. With social birds, such as seagulls, their first reaction upon hearing a distress call from one of their own is to go towards the source (to see if they can overcome the predator together). However when the call stops and they do not see a predator, this unnerves them and they tend to leave the area.
  • Non-social birds. When it comes to birds which do not communicate with each other very much, such as pigeons, they tend to disperse much more directly after initially pausing to assess the situation.

It is important to note that in both cases, if the noise deterrent is set up and then simply left, after a while the birds will realise that there is no actual threat in the area. That is why it is vital that the system is managed on an on-going basis by pest control operatives.

Some advocate ultrasonic sound to disperse birds, however since birds have hearing very similar to humans this has been found to have very little or no effectiveness.
